Glycaemic index: what a ranking cannot tell you

Glycaemic index describes a response under defined measurement conditions. It is neither an overall quality score nor a self-directed diabetes treatment guide.

Read what is being measured

Before using a table, check the exact food, preparation and reference. Two preparations with the same everyday name can differ. Glycaemic-index ranking alone does not describe portion, other meal components, nutrients or medical circumstances.

Move from a table to a meal

Choose an actual recipe and describe ingredients. A lentil salad with vegetables and bread is not simply the “lentils” row. Use general guidance for variety and seek individual advice if the meal forms part of diabetes care. None of the foods on this page replaces treatment.

Do not change monitoring yourself

A glucose measurement, an online index and a diagnosis are three separate things. If monitoring glucose, follow your team’s protocol. Do not manage unexplained variation or symptoms by removing a random food. Bring the table and questions to your appointment.

EXAMPLE / HOW TO USE IT

A comparison worksheet

Exact food: fill in. Preparation: fill in. Meal portion: describe. Other ingredients: list. Purpose: cooking organisation or a medical question? This avoids comparing raw grain in a table with a cooked dish you actually ate.
