The indication comes before the name
EMA information for Ozempic concerns type 2 diabetes in adults. Wegovy information includes weight management in adults who meet BMI criteria and, where applicable, have a relevant comorbidity. It also contains separate provisions for certain adolescents. These criteria describe an authorisation, not an invitation to select treatment yourself. Clinical assessment and national rules remain necessary.
Why trials cannot simply be combined
A trial in people with diabetes is not equivalent to one in adults without diabetes. The studied dose, accompanying treatments, inclusion criteria and outcome influence interpretation. Two percentages found on two commercial pages are therefore insufficient to rank medicines. Look for the protocol and duration, then check whether the article describes an average change or the proportion of people reaching a threshold.
What still needs checking in France
European authorisation, prescribing conditions, availability and reimbursement are four separate questions. Answers can change. Check official French information when preparing your appointment and ask the pharmacist about the prescribed presentation. We do not display an assumed national price, real-time stock or a reimbursement promise. An honest comparison identifies both what is known and what still depends on your situation.
EXAMPLE / HOW TO USE IT
A comparison worksheet
Use two columns: name and official indication; trial population; duration; intended benefit; tolerability; follow-up; cost still to verify. Leave an entry blank when it is undocumented. An unknown is more useful than an approximation presented as certainty.

Keep this checklist
- Compare indications.
- Connect each number to its trial.
- Check the current French rules.
- Have the prescriber confirm the choice and follow-up.
Compare the authorisation before the headline
In the European Union, consult the EMA medicine record and current product information for the exact brand and presentation. Both brands contain semaglutide, but their authorisations address different indications and eligible populations. That difference comes before a discussion of trial averages. A shared active substance does not establish an interchangeable prescribing decision.
A useful comparison has four columns: active substance, authorised indication, source document and questions for the prescriber. Current availability, local rules and individual eligibility require their own checks. The table below deliberately does not turn an indication into a statement that a particular reader qualifies. Nor does it supply a conversion between presentations.
| Item | Ozempic | Wegovy |
|---|---|---|
| Active substance | Semaglutide | Semaglutide |
| EMA indication, broad summary | Type 2 diabetes | Weight management in eligible populations |
| Reference to consult | Current EMA EPAR and product information | Current EMA EPAR and product information |
| Individual suitability | Clinical assessment required | Clinical assessment required |
| What this table does not supply | A weight-loss prescription or switching protocol | A dose, eligibility verdict or switching protocol |
A claim-reading example
An educational example: a headline cites the STEP 1 average and displays the word Ozempic. Before interpreting the result, open the actual study and identify the semaglutide regimen studied, population, comparator and duration. Do not replace those characteristics with a brand name in the advertisement. STEP 1 is described separately on this site so that its context remains visible.
Write three questions for the professional: what indication is being considered, what benefit is sought in my circumstances, and how will risks and follow-up be assessed? Bring a list of current medicines and supplements. This site does not decide whether to start, stop or switch a medicine and does not translate trial findings into a personal forecast.
Common questions
Does the same substance mean the same indication?
No. Read each brand’s current authorisation and product information.
Can I use the table to switch medicines?
No. It is a documentary comparison, not a conversion or prescribing protocol.
Does an average trial result predict my outcome?
No. It concerns a studied group under a specified protocol and does not determine an individual outcome.
